The reproducibility of mediums

For some time now, I have been curious how an artist chooses which medium best communicates a concept to the viewer. What does it mean to make a drawing about a topic versus a poem? What can a person learn about an idea by a looking sculpture that they can’t learn through looking at painting?

My current research is focused on the labor of repetition in my visual art practice. With this in mind, I decided to try to replicate the same piece of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) in a variety of mediums to see what happens in that repetition. Where does one medium succeed and another fail? How do the processes of each medium affect their ability to imitate a surface? And ultimately, how do my deficiencies in each medium change the outcome?
